Intarsia is anything but ancient.  Finished products are most commonly created with the use of motor driven saws (scroll saw) and sanders with a bit of hand sanding to polish things up.  Individual pieces of a wall sculpture are cut out of different pieces of wood and then glued together.  The wood is selected for its grain pattern, color, and texture.
